According to a recent NHTSA study, 3 out of 4 kids are not as secure in the car as they should be because their car seats are not being used correctly. One way a parent or caregiver can help increase their childs safety in the car is by using the LATCH system (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) to secure the car seat to the vehicle. The LATCH system, required on all car seats and most vehicles manufactured after September 1, 2002, was developed to make it easier to correctly install car seats without seatbelts. The car seats have lower attachments which fasten into anchors in the backseat of the vehicle and an upper strap or tether on the car seat which attaches to an upper attachment point in the vehicle. The PSAs, part of the Ad Councils longstanding occupant protection education campaign with NHTSA, educate parents and caregivers about what the LATCH system is and the safety benefits it provides for your children. Created pro bono by The Richards Group, the new PSAs are designed to raise awareness among all parents and caregivers, about the importance of securing their child properly in their car seats. Additionally NHTSA and the Ad Council have partnered with Disney on a complementary campaign, including TV and outdoor PSAs, which feature music and favorite characters from Baby Einstein ™, designed to educate a new generation of parents on the LATCH system. We have a rear facing infant car seat and have heard that you should not have the soft canopy/sun shade up while you’re driving. I’m curious as to why?

Using a rear facing car seat in the front seat is as safe as the rear seat (AIRBAG DISABLED). The Swedes, car seat safety obsessed nation, have been using the froint seat for the past 30+ years with fantastic results. The car seat injuries and fatalities are far lower than any other nation. Airbags are disabled with a key or a switch and so far there is not one single fatality due to malfunctioning car seats. Pure crash test data says rear seat is about 35% safer but there are other factors which make the front set a great place for a rear facing seat. Better communication between driver and child is one. No looking in the mirror or digging in the back for a pacifier. More flexible placement of kids in the car. When transporting many kids in the car the front seat means more possibilities for kids sitting properly in a car seat. Another huge factor is longer time rear facing. Many parents are concerned

We really can’t fork out money to buy a new vehicle as of right now, so we’re looking at having 3 seats in our 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Two are forward facing seats, and the other will be a infant’s rear facing car seat.
